What VNV's marks imply for Breadfast and Baly, new Saudi growth fund

Stockholm-listed investor VNV Global’s latest disclosed marks give fresh, if partial, clarity on valuation trends for several MENA growth-stage companies: VNV’s holdings imply Breadfast is valued at roughly $444 million and Baly at about $190 million, while it has written down stakes in Wasoko‑MaxAB, Vezeeta and El Basharsoft (Wuzzuf). Separately, regional dealflow continued with new funds and seed rounds: HeyBreez raised $2.5 million, AILA closed $3 million, and five Omani startups — Sooq Cars, iO Eats, Darrbak, Decoil and Pack’N — took undisclosed seed cheques from Cyfr Capital’s Seed Fund alongside Future Fund Oman.

“A terrible business, but an amazing Trojan horse,” read one blunt characterisation in a wider analysis of platform economics — a line that captures how some investors are parsing near-term pain against strategic market positioning.

VNV values its 6.8% Breadfast stake at $30.2 million, a pro‑rata calculation that implies roughly $444 million for the Egyptian grocery platform. Its 3.4% holding in Baly was marked up from $5.3 million to $6.5 million, implying an approximate $190 million valuation. By contrast, Wasoko‑MaxAB was marked down around 15% to an implied $241 million, Vezeeta fell about 13% to $26 million, and El Basharsoft / Wuzzuf was reduced roughly 29% to $11 million. These figures are derived from VNV’s disclosed ownership percentages and carrying values.

The selective uplifts and write‑downs underline a mixed picture across sectors: grocery and last‑mile supermarket models such as Breadfast and Baly have held value in private books, while B2B distribution, digital health bookings and recruitment software saw more conservative marks. The VNV disclosures provide one of the rarer windows into private valuations in an otherwise opaque regional market.

  • Venture and growth fund activity: Pinnacle Capital launched a closed‑ended fund focused on Saudi growth-stage tech, targeting fintech, Riyadh‑tied businesses, e‑commerce and health and lifestyle. The CMA‑licensed firm is led by CEO Abdulwahab AlBetairi and lists Moayed Almoayed among its partners. Fund size and LP composition were not disclosed.
  • Exits and secondary activity: Khwarizmi Ventures partially exited logistics firm Bosta at a net multiple of around 3x, marking a sixth portfolio exit for the Saudi firm and the second sell‑down by an early Bosta backer in three months as the company prepares for a potential listing worth up to $170 million. Transaction buyer, value and remaining stake were not disclosed.
  • Deals and fundraising: HeyBreez closed a $2.5 million oversubscribed Seed round led by Lunara Partners; Saudi edtech AILA raised $3 million in a pre‑Series A led by Rua Growth Fund. In Oman, Sooq Cars, iO Eats, Darrbak, Decoil and Pack’N each received undisclosed Seed Fund investments from Cyfr Capital alongside Future Fund Oman.
  • M&A and infrastructure: Exits MENA acquired Avanz Capital Egypt in a multi‑seven‑figure transaction, rebranding the business as Exits Manara and moving the Cairo advisory platform into regulated fund management.

Outlook: the VNV marks and recent fund moves signal that while headline valuations remain heterogeneous across sectors, investor appetite exists for selective winners and structured secondary routes. Funds such as Pinnacle’s Saudi growth vehicle and active secondary sellers like Khwarizmi suggest more liquidity solutions for founders and early backers, even as portfolio companies continue to be re‑rated to reflect line‑by‑line performance and strategic positioning.
