UAE Startup Ecosystem Matures: Sheraa Pushes Founders Beyond Fast Fundraising to Sustainable Growth

Sharjah-based accelerator Sheraa is steering UAE founders away from a singular focus on rapid fundraising and scale, urging entrepreneurs to prioritise customer retention, unit economics and long-term viability. The organisation, which runs a year-round membership programme and initiatives such as the Access Sharjah Challenge, is also backing recovery from recent regional disruption through its Entrepreneurship Resilience Fund, an effort that involved more than 22 partners.

“Startups used to be all about speed. Raise quicker, grow faster. That was the measure of success. Now it’s deeper than that. We’ve matured as an ecosystem,”

said Tayeb Hassan, Community Growth Manager at Sheraa and co-founder of Nafsi Health, emphasising a shift in how success is measured across the UAE startup landscape.

Sheraa’s programmes target founders across stages, offering investor and commercial introductions, networking and tailored support. The Access Sharjah Challenge specifically connects startups with procurement opportunities at larger organisations, giving young businesses another route to customers and commercial contracts. Hassan described Sheraa as the “glue” connecting investors, universities, corporates and founders who might otherwise rarely meet, adding that the accelerator’s role is “to shorten that distance for founders, between founders and their next opportunity.”

The abundance of information available to founders—bolstered by AI tools that make skills and answers instantly accessible—has created a fresh challenge. “What is the most important thing I can do for my startup right now? What is the most relevant, highest-leverage task I can do to set myself up for success?” Hassan said, noting that founders increasingly need help deciding where to focus at different stages of growth.

Sheraa also responded to recent supply-chain shocks and commercial disruption with the Entrepreneurship Resilience Fund, which combined monetary grants, marketing support and exposure to help affected companies regain stability. Hassan said Sheraa felt “it was almost a duty for us to step up and provide them with the support they needed at that time, as quickly as we could.” The initiative drew participation from more than 22 partners and highlighted the potential for local UAE-based manufacturers and founders to fill gaps when international supply chains faltered.

Hassan identified manufacturing, healthcare, agriculture and sustainability as sectors with further opportunity in Sharjah, with technology and artificial intelligence expected to be embedded across industries rather than treated as standalone verticals. He argued that local manufacturing proved particularly valuable during the disruption, as UAE-based founders stepped in to meet demand when international connectivity was constrained.

Looking ahead, Sheraa is pursuing a 2030 vision that includes supporting 1,000 entrepreneurs. “The number is 1,000 entrepreneurs, but really it’s all about that feedback loop of founders taking and then giving once they’ve reached a state of maturity,” Hassan said, pointing to a longer-term goal of building businesses that grow within the ecosystem and later return as investors, mentors or supporters of the next generation.
