Saudi Global Ports Supports Vision 2030 Logistics
Saudi Global Ports Group (SGP) is shifting from a terminal operator to an integrated supply-chain ecosystem, expanding capacity and services across ports, rail and inland logistics in support of Saudi Vision 2030, and rolling out digital and automation solutions to improve connectivity between Dammam, Riyadh and inland markets.

Saudi Global Ports Group (SGP) is repositioning from a terminal operator into an integrated supply-chain ecosystem, expanding services beyond port gates to rail, inland logistics and wider port-linked offerings as part of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 logistics ambitions. The group has increased King Abdulaziz Port Dammam’s annual handling capacity to 3.8 million TEUs, taken on operation of Jubail Container Terminal, and is rolling out digital and automation measures—such as automated gates and real-time tracking—to improve connectivity between Dammam, Riyadh and inland markets.
"The shift has transformed SGP from a terminal operator into an integrated supply chain ecosystem," said Daniel Phay, Chief Operating Officer of Saudi Global Ports Group and Chief Executive Officer of SGP Container Terminals. "Today, we manage the entire cargo journey, from the vessel’s arrival at the port to final delivery inland."
Operational changes and digital investments
SGP frames success not solely by yard productivity or terminal throughput but by end-to-end supply chain performance, reliability and customer experience. As a member of PSA Group, SGP aligns with PSA International’s Node to Network Strategy to link ports, rail, inland terminals and logistics zones within the Kingdom and globally, offering customers greater visibility and alternative routing options.
- Infrastructure and capacity: Enhancements at King Abdulaziz Port Dammam have raised annual handling capability to 3.8 million TEUs and prepared the terminal for larger, next‑generation mega container vessels.
- Network expansion: The addition of Jubail Container Terminal strengthens SGP’s Eastern Coast network and proximity to industrial and petrochemical customers, improving options for industrial exports and regional supply chains.
- Digital and automation: SGP reports that automated gates have effectively halved gate service times. Real-time tracking, automated gates and digital yard systems improve visibility and reduce truck waiting times through initiatives such as "SGP Best Pick," which directs transporters to the nearest suitable container.
- Sustainability: A fleet of electrified equipment complements digital initiatives, reducing CO2 emissions in line with Vision 2030 goals.
- Partnerships: SGP cites collaboration with PSA International and fellow Public Investment Fund portfolio companies, including SAR and Folk Maritime, to strengthen multimodal connectivity across the Kingdom.
Coordination, visibility and resilience
Phay emphasised that reliable cargo movement depends on behind-the-scenes coordination: "We synchronise vessel schedules, rail operations and inland supply chain activities to create predictable and reliable cargo flows." He pointed to digital platforms and real-time data as enablers of proactive decision-making and better collaboration among ports, rail operators and logistics providers.
Looking forward, SGP is targeting advanced analytics, artificial intelligence and predictive operations as the next major opportunity to anticipate disruptions, optimise assets and boost productivity. The Dammam Integrated Logistics Zone (DILZ) is highlighted as a strategic development that will add warehousing, value‑added services and seamless maritime-rail-road connectivity, further integrating ports, rail and industrial zones.
Over the next five to ten years, SGP says meaningful progress will mean evolving into a fully integrated supply chain ecosystem that supports Saudi Arabia’s ambition to become a global logistics hub, enhances efficiency and sustainability, and delivers greater resilience and customer experience across the Upper Gulf trade corridor.
