Nick Genty, Co-Founder & CEO of AgEye: From a Storefront Full of Robots to a Deal in Qatar

AgEye, a Raleigh-based indoor-farming robotics and edge-AI startup led by co-founder & CEO Nick Genty, has raised roughly $5M largely from corporate VCs and signed distributor deals plus a new partnership to deploy compact indoor farms in Qatar.

Nick Genty, Co-Founder & CEO of AgEye: From a Storefront Full of Robots to a Deal in Qatar

Nick Genty, co‑founder and CEO of AgEye Technologies, said his Raleigh startup has grown from a storefront of robots and plants to closing roughly $5 million in funding and signing distributor deals and a new partnership in Qatar aimed at deploying compact indoor farms for hospitality and food-and-beverage customers. AgEye builds robotics and AI software for indoor farms, has joined the NVIDIA Inception program and leverage edge AI hardware such as the NVIDIA Jetson, and counts corporate venture arms — including Dutch agricultural firm Nurion and German filtration company Mann+Hummel — among its backers.

“Someone couldn’t just look at what you’ve done and really ascertain how you got there and decode it,” Genty said, describing the company’s combined hardware and proprietary plant data as a competitive moat.

How AgEye got here

Genty’s path to AgEye threaded through earlier ventures and unexpected technical pivots. A Raleigh native and East Carolina University alumnus who studied general business, he began his career in IT project management for the North Carolina court system, where he met his long‑time collaborator John. The pair later co‑founded Iconic Solutions, a B2B professional services company that worked with brands such as Carfax, Harris Teeter, and Live Nation and ultimately moved into regulated markets including medical devices and pharma.

Work on an FDA‑track red‑light‑therapy device exposed Genty and his team to how controlled light and environmental variables affect biology. Faced with the cost and time of medical regulation, they pivoted toward indoor farming — a non‑regulated biological system where the same hardware‑software interplay could be productized more quickly.

AgEye’s earliest customers were running farms from spreadsheets, which pushed the company to build a full stack of sensors, robotics and cloud/edge software rather than merely offering a data layer. The maturation of edge AI hardware and platforms — notably the NVIDIA Jetson and the company’s acceptance into NVIDIA Inception in 2019 — allowed AgEye to run AI models directly on low‑power devices at farms.

  • Funding and partners: About $5 million raised, largely via corporate venture capital from Nurion and Mann+Hummel.
  • Market shifts: The team initially targeted cannabis growers and retains a North Carolina hemp license, but state‑by‑state licensing instability pushed the startup toward leafy greens, tomatoes and strawberries.
  • Go‑to‑market: Early customer development came from unexpected channels such as Reddit grower forums, since many head growers had limited LinkedIn presence.
  • Commercial traction: AgEye has signed two large‑scale distributor contracts and a new Middle East partnership in Qatar focused on delivering compact, self‑contained farms to restaurants and resorts.

Outlook

Genty frames AgEye’s value proposition as a blend of tangible hardware and a proprietary data moat that is difficult to reverse engineer. With strategic corporate investors and distributor agreements in place, the company is pushing into hospitality and F&B in the Middle East while continuing to sell to growers across the U.S., from Nebraska to coastal states. The Qatar deal signals a deliberate expansion into markets that value on‑site, compact production, and the company’s combination of robotics, sensors and edge AI positions it to compete where growers need automated, reliable plant monitoring and control.
