US-UAE create first defense technology task force for cybersecurity

The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) and the United Arab Emirates have created a bilateral military unit dedicated to turning artificial intelligence into operational defence capabilities. Named Task Force Talon Synapse, the team will be based in Abu Dhabi, is expected to be formally activated in the coming weeks, and will bring together roughly 20 American and Emirati specialists in artificial intelligence, data science and cybersecurity to develop and field AI-powered capabilities for military operations.

"This will be a historic milestone," said Adm. Brad Cooper, commander of U.S. Central Command, adding that both countries aim to deliver evolving AI capabilities to warfighters more quickly and that the partners share "a commitment to adopting AI technologies that encourage innovation at speed and scale."

Task Force Talon Synapse is structured to move beyond pure research and focus on operationalisation: turning emerging AI technologies into tools that can be used in theater. CENTCOM outlined three initial operational priorities for the unit:

• Developing AI applications for intelligence support;
• Strengthening protection of critical infrastructure;
• Improving monitoring of the regional security environment.

The task force follows more than a year of planning. Discussions between Adm. Cooper and UAE National Security Advisor Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan began last year as both governments explored deeper cooperation on advanced technologies. CENTCOM officials subsequently met with Emirati defence representatives and artificial intelligence industry leaders during a regional visit to refine the concept ahead of public announcement.

Organisationally, the unit is notable for embedding technical specialists from both countries in the same operational team rather than pursuing a typical procurement- or equipment-focused partnership. CENTCOM and UAE planners intend that co-location and integrated teams will accelerate testing, development and deployment of AI-driven military applications by shortening decision and feedback loops between developers and end users.

The initiative aligns with the UAE’s ongoing push to embed AI across its defence sector. The country has already partnered with technology companies on autonomous systems and analytics — including a collaboration with Anduril to co-produce autonomous drones for defence missions — and has increased government support for AI across civilian and military programmes. AI has featured in high-level bilateral discussions: Sheikh Tahnoon’s visit to the White House in March 2025 included talks on artificial intelligence, emerging technologies and broader bilateral ties.

If Task Force Talon Synapse succeeds in rapidly fielding practical AI tools for intelligence, infrastructure protection and regional monitoring, the model could shape future U.S. approaches to AI partnerships with allied nations. CENTCOM’s plan to activate the unit within weeks and to staff it with roughly 20 combined specialists signals a deliberate, compact pilot that could scale if operational results meet expectations.

Key near-term indicators to watch will include the task force’s initial toolsets for intelligence support, measures taken to harden critical infrastructure using AI, and how quickly prototypes transition from lab demonstrations into deployed systems for regional security monitoring. Success could encourage similar embedded teams across other allied relationships; shortcomings will offer lessons on interoperability, data sharing and the operational limits of current AI technologies in defence contexts.
