UPI Hits Record 24.51 Billion Transactions in August 2026

Unified Payments Interface (UPI) recorded an all-time high of 24.51 billion transactions in August 2026, registering a 22% year-on-year increase in transaction volume and processing payments worth Rs 29.82 lakh crore. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) data shows transactions rose 3.6% from 23.66 billion in July, while the total transaction value dipped marginally from Rs 29.88 lakh crore in July to Rs 29.82 lakh crore in August.

"UPI hits a record 24.51 billion transactions worth Rs 29.82 lakh crore in August 2026, marking a 22% year-on-year growth in transaction volume," wrote Mayank Kumar in the release of the monthly data.

August’s performance translates to an average of 791 million UPI transactions per day, with the average daily transaction value at roughly Rs 96,205 crore. Immediate Payment Service (IMPS) volumes for the month were also substantial: IMPS processed 360 million transactions with a value of Rs 7.04 lakh crore. These figures underline the continuing centrality of digital payment rails to everyday commerce in India.

Detailed monthly metrics

  • Total UPI transactions (August 2026): 24.51 billion
  • Transaction value (August 2026): Rs 29.82 lakh crore
  • Month-on-month transaction growth (July → August): 3.6% (from 23.66 billion)
  • Year-on-year volume growth: 22%
  • Year-on-year value growth: 20%
  • Average daily UPI transactions: 791 million
  • Average daily transaction value: ~Rs 96,205 crore
  • IMPS (August 2026): 360 million transactions worth Rs 7.04 lakh crore

UPI’s international footprint also continued to expand in August. The payments system is now enabled for merchant payments across 10 overseas markets: the Maldives, Singapore, UAE, France, Mauritius, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Qatar, Cambodia and Bhutan. NPCI International has further broadened interoperability by partnering with Uzbekistan’s HUMO payment network, enabling Indian travellers to make merchant payments using UPI apps in that market.

These global tie-ups form part of broader efforts to make cross-border acceptance of UPI seamless for Indian users abroad and to offer a low-friction merchant payment option in partner countries. The addition of HUMO in Uzbekistan follows earlier enablement deals in other jurisdictions and reflects a push to convert UPI’s domestic dominance into a globally accepted retail payment credential.

Outlook

With 24.51 billion transactions in a single month, UPI’s infrastructure and participant ecosystem face renewed operational and regulatory scrutiny to maintain uptime, security and scalability. The slight month-over-month decline in transaction value despite higher volumes suggests changing payment ticket sizes or sectoral shifts in spending patterns that stakeholders will likely monitor.

As NPCI International inks more partnerships — and as IMPS and other payment rails continue to process significant volumes alongside UPI — the coming quarters will test institutions’ ability to support rising transaction loads while expanding cross-border acceptance. For users and businesses, the near-term trajectory points to greater convenience and wider acceptance of UPI both inside India and in an increasing number of international markets.
