Dubai hosted the Food Security SummitX 2026 on 29 and 30 June, bringing together government representatives, researchers, investors, entrepreneurs and technology companies to tackle food security challenges across the Gulf. The two-day event emphasised technology-driven solutions — from artificial intelligence and precision agriculture to controlled-environment farming and biotechnology — and framed food security as an economic and strategic priority in a region where GCC countries import more than 85 percent of their food.

"In a region with limited freshwater resources, scarce arable land and a demanding climate for farming, food security is no longer simply an agricultural issue," said Genesis Prefer, reflecting the summit's central thesis on the need for cross-sectoral action.

The summit programme explored a broad range of topics that aim to reshape how food is produced, distributed and consumed. Speakers at the event stressed that building resilience requires an ecosystem approach. Beyond production techniques, the UAE's longer-term strategy described at the summit includes strengthening logistics, food processing and storage, and forging international partnerships. With the global population projected to approach 10 billion by 2050, summit participants argued that innovation will be essential to meeting future demand. The gathering reiterated that investment in agritech across the Gulf is not solely about growing food in the desert, but about building a smarter, more resilient food system capable of withstanding geopolitical and climate-related disruptions.
