Tatweer Medical Plans $100m Investment to Expand Egypt's Medical Technology Manufacturing

Tatweer Medical Industries, a subsidiary of El Ezaby Medical, and China’s Mindray will invest more than US$100 million over the next three years to expand medical device manufacturing at a facility in Badr City, east of Cairo. The expansion aims to localise production of advanced diagnostic equipment, increase annual output of ultrasound and diagnostic X‑ray systems, and position Egypt as a regional production and export hub for healthcare technologies.

"The expansion programme is designed to broaden domestic manufacturing capabilities while supporting future exports to regional markets through the partnership with Mindray," said Taha Abdel Nasser, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Tatweer Medical Industries.

Project details and current capacity

The factory occupies 10,000 square metres across two floors of 5,000 square metres each. The first operational phase, covering 2,500 square metres, is already complete. Current investments in the site have exceeded US$12 million, with company projections that total investment will reach approximately US$16 million by the end of 2026 and surpass US$100 million during the third year of the expansion programme.

  • Products in production: ultrasound systems and diagnostic X‑ray systems.
  • Annual production capacity today: approximately 2,000 ultrasound systems and 1,500 diagnostic X‑ray units.
  • Planned product expansion: from two categories to ten, adding eight new products over the coming years.
  • Local content target: increase to about 60% beginning with the second production batch.
  • Upcoming product introductions: Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) slated for production next year.

Tatweer Medical has secured initial government procurement contracts that provide immediate demand for the factory’s output. The company signed agreements to supply 100 ultrasound systems and 150 diagnostic X‑ray units to the Ministry of Health and Population and the Egyptian Authority for Unified Procurement, Medical Supply and Technology Management. Those contracts are valued at an estimated EGP 300–400 million and will act as anchor orders during the factory's early production phase.

Deliveries are scheduled to commence in the coming months: ultrasound equipment are due for delivery beginning in July 2026, while diagnostic X‑ray systems will be supplied in four phases starting in August 2026. The partnership with Mindray, China’s largest listed medical device manufacturer, is described by company officials as establishing Egypt’s first local manufacturing facility dedicated to ultrasound and diagnostic X‑ray systems.

Outlook and regional ambitions

Company executives say the expansion supports a broader strategy to reduce import dependence, retain foreign currency, and strengthen supply‑chain resilience by increasing domestic manufacturing of higher‑value medical technologies. By combining local production capacity with international technology transfer from Mindray, Tatweer Medical aims to expand exports to African markets and increase the share of locally sourced components to roughly 60% over time.
