stc pay Bahrain partners with PayPal on transfers

stc pay Bahrain has partnered with PayPal to enable direct cross-border transfers between the two platforms, allowing verified stc pay customers to link their PayPal accounts to stc pay wallets, fund PayPal balances from their stc pay accounts and withdraw available PayPal balances back into stc pay. Withdrawals will convert automatically from USD, PayPal’s settlement currency, into Bahraini dinar (BHD). The service targets shoppers, freelancers, content creators and small and medium-sized enterprises conducting international transactions.

"The integration formed part of the company's broader strategy to expand its financial services offering and support Bahrain's fintech sector," said Metin Zavrak, CEO of stc pay Bahrain.

Under the arrangement, account linking is available to verified stc pay Bahrain customers and is subject to the platform’s existing verification requirements. The companies say the feature reduces intermediary steps that typically accompany moving funds between local and international accounts by linking a global digital wallet directly to a domestic mobile wallet. That process allows users to more easily manage international receipts and spending from a single mobile interface.

"The partnership was intended to widen access to cross-border commerce for consumers and businesses in the country," said Otto Williams, SVP, Regional Head and General Manager, Middle East and Africa, PayPal.

How the service works

  • Verified stc pay Bahrain users can securely link PayPal accounts to their stc pay wallets.
  • Users can fund their PayPal wallet from their stc pay account balance.
  • Available PayPal balances can be withdrawn back into stc pay wallets, with automatic conversion from USD into BHD.
  • Account linking and transfers remain subject to stc pay’s compliance, verification and security standards.

Company statements position the partnership as a response to local demand for more direct ways to manage international payments and digital earnings. Use cases highlighted include freelancers and creators receiving payments from overseas clients, consumers buying from international e-commerce platforms and SMEs carrying out cross-border trade. By providing a local on-ramp and off-ramp between PayPal and stc pay, the integration creates a direct corridor for funds that previously might have required multiple intermediary accounts or currency conversions.

The move follows a broader regional pattern of mobile wallet providers seeking interoperability with global payment networks as digital commerce and remote work continue to increase cross-border payment volumes. For PayPal, the integration adds a new local distribution channel into Bahrain’s digital wallet ecosystem and extends its reach into the domestic market. For stc pay Bahrain, the tie-up is framed as an expansion of its financial services suite aimed at strengthening Bahrain’s fintech infrastructure.

Outlook

The companies say security and compliance will mirror existing standards applied across stc pay’s financial products, though specifics on fees, transaction limits and exact timing of a full public rollout were not disclosed. Market uptake will likely depend on user awareness, pricing and the speed and reliability of the linking and conversion process. If adopted widely by freelancers, creators and merchants, the integration could streamline how Bahrain-based users receive and spend international payments, while offering PayPal greater penetration into a domestic mobile-wallet channel.
