SABIC Lenovo MoU to Advance Industrial Innovation in Saudi Arabia

SABIC and Lenovo have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore strategic collaboration on industrial innovation, advanced technology development, knowledge transfer and capability building in Saudi Arabia. The agreement was signed on September 1 on the sidelines of the LEAP Tech Conference in Riyadh, in the presence of Dr Faisal Alfaqeer, CEO and Executive Board Member of SABIC. The MoU establishes a framework for the two companies to identify areas of mutual cooperation that could support Saudi Arabia’s ambitions to strengthen its position as a global hub for advanced industry.

"The Kingdom is emerging as one of the world’s most dynamic markets for technology, innovation and advanced industry," said Tareq Alangari, President, Middle East, Türkiye and Africa at Lenovo, underlining the rationale for the partnership and the potential for combining Lenovo’s global technology capabilities with SABIC’s industrial expertise.

The memorandum does not commit either company to a specific project at this stage. Instead, it creates an exploratory platform for joint assessment of opportunities where hardware, software, data analytics and industrial know‑how might be brought together. Abdulrahman Shamsaddin, Executive Vice President, Petrochemicals at SABIC, described the timing of the agreement as aligned with a "significant industrial transformation" in Saudi Arabia, and emphasized that strategic partnerships can accelerate the development of advanced capabilities, facilitate knowledge exchange and create new sustainable economic opportunities.

Scope and aims of the MoU

• Support knowledge transfer and capability development within Saudi Arabia and in international markets.
• Identify practical areas of cooperation where SABIC’s industrial scale and Lenovo’s technology stack complement each other.

Both companies framed the MoU as a response to Saudi Arabia’s broader economic and industrial transformation agenda, which prioritizes strengthening domestic capabilities and developing high‑value industries. For SABIC — a global chemical and materials giant — the agreement offers a route to integrate emerging digital and computing technologies into industrial processes, while for Lenovo it provides a pathway to deepen presence in a market that company leadership regards as rapidly advancing in technology adoption.

The announcement highlights a broader trend of alliances between industrial groups and global technology providers aimed at bringing advanced computing, artificial intelligence and data management to traditional sectors. By setting out an initial framework rather than defined projects, SABIC and Lenovo can undertake joint assessments, pilot studies and capability‑building initiatives before committing capital or operational resources to specific deployments.

Next steps outlined by the companies include joint identification of priority areas and evaluation of potential cooperation opportunities. The MoU positions both partners to test how industrial expertise and technology can be combined to accelerate the adoption and development of advanced industrial capabilities in the Kingdom.

If the exploratory phase finds concrete alignment, the partnership could deliver pilot projects that promote technology transfer, workforce upskilling and more integrated industry‑technology value chains — supporting the stated aim of bolstering Saudi Arabia’s role as a centre for innovation and advanced industry.
