Riyadh Air: Why the World’s Newest Airline Is Changing the Game
Riyadh Air, backed by the Public Investment Fund, has launched as a digitally native premium long-haul carrier based in Riyadh, focusing on AI-driven booking, a modern Boeing 787-9 fleet and rapid route expansion. The airline targets more than 100 global destinations by the end of the decade and markets a loyalty ecosystem called Sfeer.

Riyadh Air, backed by the Public Investment Fund, has launched as a digitally native, premium carrier aiming to redefine long-haul travel from the Saudi capital. The airline — also referred to as Riyadh Airways — is building a modern Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner fleet, has announced twice-daily flights between King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh and Cairo International Airport, and targets connections from Riyadh and Jeddah to more than 100 global destinations by the end of the decade.
"When a multi-billion-dollar airline launches with a completely clean slate—free from legacy software systems or aging aircraft—it forces the entire global industry to elevate its standards," the airline's public narrative states, framing Riyadh Air’s market entry as a technology and hospitality-led challenge to established Gulf carriers.
The carrier’s push centers on three pillars: a digital-first passenger experience, a state-of-the-art fleet and an aggressive route and talent expansion. Riyadh Air markets its booking platforms as native, AI-enhanced systems offering intuitive trip-planning tools, predictive pricing insights and smart destination guides. The site experience is described as feeling "less like a legacy ticket counter and more like a high-end consumer tech product," with algorithms surfacing optimal fares and personalized add-ons for travelers.
- Fleet and routes: Riyadh Air is operating Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners on its newly announced Riyadh–Cairo corridor, positioning that route as a connector to London, Manchester, Madrid and future Asian links.
- Onboard experience: The airline promotes benefits of its modern wide-body jets—lower cabin altitude pressure, improved air filtration and reduced cabin noise—paired with high-speed connectivity, custom ambient lighting and next-generation seating layouts.
- Hospitality and service: The carrier combines "warm Saudi hospitality with world-class standards," promising high-end culinary concepts and personalized crew service rather than fully automated interactions.
- Loyalty and offers: Riyadh Air’s Sfeer loyalty ecosystem invites early adopters as founding members. Sfeer members receive perks including a "Best Offer Guaranteed" tier, complimentary high-speed inflight internet, priority booking access for inaugural flights and personalized milestone rewards.
Beyond customer-facing features, Riyadh Air is positioning itself as an employer of global talent. The carrier is recruiting across technology, aviation engineering and international hospitality management to staff a multicultural operational and onboard team. That hiring push is presented as integral to both the airline’s service ambitions and broader national economic objectives tied to diversifying employment.
Analysts and industry watchers should note Riyadh Air’s strategic emphasis on technology and sustainability. The airline explicitly frames sustainability as part of its competitive identity, promising "industry-leading environmental practices" alongside the digital and comfort-led innovations.
Outlook: Over the next few years Riyadh Air will be judged on its ability to scale routes beyond the initial Cairo link, to deliver consistently on its AI-driven booking promises and to maintain premium onboard standards as frequency grows. If the carrier meets its stated goal of connecting more than 100 destinations by the decade’s end while sustaining Sfeer membership benefits and digital differentiation, it could significantly alter competitive dynamics among Gulf long-haul operators and set new expectations for how legacy and new airlines invest in software, sustainability and passenger comfort.
