Omani space technology firm wins award at UN AI event in Geneva

An Omani space technology startup, Oman Lens, won a bronze award at the International Telecommunication Union’s AI for Good initiative in Geneva on Tuesday for its role in an international project themed “Eradicating Hunger.” The project used artificial intelligence to analyse agricultural crops and bolster food security by applying advanced algorithms to space data and satellite imagery. The accolade was presented during the UN Global Dialogue on Artificial Intelligence Governance, which assembled representatives from 193 UN member states, technology companies, civil society groups and academic and technical institutions.

"Oman also reaffirmed its readiness to support international efforts to strengthen AI governance and maximize the benefits of AI applications in cooperation with the UN and other partners," the delegation declared at the sidelines of the dialogue.

The bronze award recognises Oman Lens’s contribution to a collaborative effort that harnessed earth observation datasets together with AI techniques to assess crop health, predict yields and identify regions at heightened risk of food insecurity. The firm’s work drew on satellite imagery and space-derived data streams to feed machine-learning models able to detect stress in vegetation and map crop conditions across large geographic areas — an approach that can inform early-warning systems and targeted humanitarian or agricultural interventions.

Oman Lens’s recognition came amid a broader UN-hosted conversation on artificial intelligence governance. The UN Global Dialogue on Artificial Intelligence Governance brought together delegates from across government, industry and civil society to discuss standards, partnerships and capacity building for AI applications. The ITU’s AI for Good initiative, which administered the awards, promotes using AI to address global challenges by building skills, setting standards and facilitating cross-sector collaboration.

On the sidelines of the Geneva dialogue, Ali bin Amer Al Shidhani, undersecretary of Oman’s Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology for Communications and Information Technology, met with ITU Secretary-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin. The two senior officials discussed avenues for cooperation and emphasised Oman’s domestic efforts to modernise legislation and update policies to keep pace with rapid advances in AI.

  • Event: International Telecommunication Union’s AI for Good initiative, Geneva
  • Award: Bronze for Oman Lens
  • Project theme: “Eradicating Hunger” — AI applied to agricultural crop analysis
  • Participants: Representatives from 193 UN member states and diverse stakeholder groups
  • Key meeting: Ali bin Amer Al Shidhani with ITU Secretary-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin

The award underscores growing interest in leveraging space technologies and AI for food-security solutions. For Oman Lens, the recognition provides international visibility and validation of its technical approach — combining satellite-derived imagery with AI-driven analytics to support agronomic decision-making. It also aligns with Oman’s stated intention to modernise regulatory frameworks and to engage more actively in international AI governance discussions.

Looking ahead, the report of the dialogue suggests further collaboration opportunities between national authorities, UN agencies and private-sector technology firms to scale AI applications in agriculture. Oman’s delegation signalled readiness to participate in such cooperative efforts, signalling potential follow-on partnerships aimed at translating prototype tools into operational systems that can assist farmers, policy makers and humanitarian responders in addressing food-security challenges.
