Oman health venture plans $10 million investment
GenomaLab Medical Group will invest nearly $10 million in its first year in Oman to establish operations offering diagnostics, home-care and advanced therapies including continuous glucose monitoring, stem-cell banking, cell and gene therapy and NGS testing. The company has begun recruitment (30–50 staff) and is using SOHAR Port and Freezone as a regional base while developing mainland facilities.

GenomaLab Medical Group plans to invest nearly $10 million in its first year of operations in Oman as it establishes a presence spanning SOHAR Port and Freezone and mainland facilities, the company’s chief executive said. The healthcare and medical-technology firm has begun recruitment and will introduce services including continuous glucose monitoring, home healthcare products, stem-cell banking, cell and gene therapies and next-generation sequencing (NGS) testing as it seeks to serve patients and partner organisations across the Sultanate.
“In the first year, our investment will be almost $10 million,” Dr A Shavki, Chief Executive Officer of GenomaLab Medical LLC, told the Observer in an exclusive interview. “We are introducing continuous glucose monitoring and diabetes technologies, home-care products, cell and gene therapy, stem-cell banking and other new health-related technologies.”
Operational footprint and staffing
GenomaLab said it has already begun operations and is recruiting staff for an initial workforce it expects to number between 30 and 50 employees, including at least 10 Omani nationals to comply with local employment requirements. The company is using SOHAR Port and Freezone as a logistical and regional base while developing mainland operations designed to provide closer access to hospitals, clinics, laboratories, research institutions and patients throughout Oman.
Planned services and partnerships
The company outlined a portfolio that combines diagnostic and therapeutic offerings with infrastructure and technical support under a turnkey model covering laboratory design, equipment installation, commissioning, validation and supply of consumables. Initial services highlighted in the interview include:
- Continuous glucose monitoring systems and diabetes-care technologies
- Home-care products for patients managing chronic conditions
- Stem-cell banking and biobanking discussions with public and private entities
- Cell and gene therapy development and technology transfer
- Next-generation sequencing (NGS) testing for inherited conditions, cancer and other diseases
Dr Shavki confirmed that the firm has signed agreements with two clinics to provide services for diabetes patients, though he did not disclose the names of those clinics or the commercial value of the deals. The company is also engaged in talks with both public- and private-sector organisations on stem-cell biobanking, technology transfer and the provision of NGS testing services.
Regulatory and public-health context
The rollout of advanced services will proceed subject to necessary local licensing and regulatory approvals. GenomaLab emphasised that NGS technologies enable large-scale analysis of genetic material that can support diagnosis and monitoring across a range of conditions, while continuous glucose monitoring addresses an urgent need given the high prevalence of diabetes in the Gulf.
To raise awareness and expand access, GenomaLab plans to run a nationwide campaign in November offering free screening tests for diabetes patients; details on locations, participating clinics and eligibility will be announced closer to the launch. The company has not disclosed whether its first-year spending will include dedicated laboratory or production facilities or provided a firm timetable for the full rollout of each service.
Outlook
The near-term outlook centres on recruitment, regulatory approvals and partnership development as GenomaLab implements its nearly $10 million initial investment and introduces its suite of diagnostics, home-care and advanced therapeutic services into Oman. The company says its Oman operation will combine local customer access, regional logistics via SOHAR and international scientific expertise as it scales activities in the Sultanate and explores wider regional markets.
