News: Africa World Airlines, Etihad Forge Aviation Partnership to Expand West Africa Connectivity

Africa World Airlines and Etihad Sign MoU to Link West Africa with Abu Dhabi and Beyond

Africa World Airlines (AWA) and Etihad Airways have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a strategic partnership intended to strengthen passenger, cargo and loyalty connectivity between West Africa, Abu Dhabi and Etihad’s global network. The agreement, signed in Accra and effective from 24 July 2026, will enable single-ticket journeys that link Etihad’s international services with AWA’s intra‑West Africa network and prepare the ground for Etihad’s own Abu Dhabi–Accra service launching on 24 March 2027.

“Ghana is one of West Africa’s most dynamic aviation markets, and Africa World Airlines is the natural partner there,” said Arik De, Chief Commercial and Revenue Officer, Etihad Airways. “This framework spans passenger services, cargo and loyalty, and it will connect Ghanaian travellers and businesses to Abu Dhabi and to our network across the world’s 118 destinations. We are here to grow with Ghana.”

The MoU outlines staged implementation across three primary areas: passenger interline connectivity, cargo cooperation and loyalty programme integration. Once interline arrangements take effect, Etihad guests will be able to continue beyond Accra onto AWA’s domestic and regional services on a single ticket, while AWA customers will enjoy seamless access to Etihad’s routes through Abu Dhabi.

Operational scope and network

  • MoU effective date: 24 July 2026
  • Etihad global network cited: 118 destinations
  • Etihad Abu Dhabi–Accra service launch: 24 March 2027
  • Key AWA network points named: Kumasi, Tamale, Takoradi, Lagos, Abuja and Ouagadougou

Sohail Mahmood, Chief Operating Officer of Africa World Airlines, described the partnership as a direct benefit for both travellers and businesses: “Africa World Airlines has proudly connected Ghana and West Africa for more than a decade, with a network that includes Kumasi, Tamale, Takoradi, Lagos, Abuja and Ouagadougou. This partnership with Etihad Airways across passenger, cargo and loyalty will give our customers a direct line to Abu Dhabi expansive network, while supporting greater opportunities for Ghanaian travellers and International businesses.”

Beyond passenger connectivity, the agreement explicitly targets cargo cooperation. The two carriers intend to link Ghanaian and West African exporters with Etihad Cargo’s global capacity, creating additional freight options through Abu Dhabi to markets served by Etihad. Loyalty programme collaboration is also part of the framework, offering members of both airlines’ schemes new ways to earn and redeem across the combined routes.

Context and next steps

Officials say the partnership arrives amid growing commercial engagement between Ghana and the United Arab Emirates and rising travel between Accra and the UAE. The MoU sets a staged timetable for implementation; combined journeys using interline cooperation will go on sale as soon as the individual areas of cooperation are rolled out.

For AWA, which has operated regional services for more than a decade, the deal offers expanded international feed and potential cargo volumes. For Etihad, the partnership provides a regional gateway into multiple West African markets ahead of its scheduled Abu Dhabi–Accra service. The two carriers will likely move to operationalise ticketing, baggage transfer and schedule coordination in the coming months to ensure a smooth launch of combined itineraries ahead of March 2027.
