New Orleans startup accelerator earns national recognition

The Idea Village, a New Orleans-based nonprofit startup accelerator founded in 2000, has been named to TIME’s list of America's Best Incubators & Accelerators for 2026, gaining national recognition for its work across Louisiana and the Gulf South. The organization says it has supported more than 23,700 entrepreneurs since its founding, with alumni companies collectively raising more than $550 million in capital and generating more than $2 billion in regional economic impact. Ventures that participated in its programs over the past five years raised $97 million, created 505 jobs and produced more than $41 million in annual revenue.

“This recognition affirms what we've believed for more than two decades: world-class companies can be built anywhere when founders have access to the right resources, networks and community,” said Jon Atkinson, CEO of The Idea Village.

The TIME ranking, developed with Statista, evaluates incubators and accelerators using alumni assessments, performance records and recommendations from entrepreneurs and startup investors. The Idea Village’s programs span early-stage companies through startups preparing for institutional investment and are designed to link founders with mentorship, programming and capital.

  • Programs: IDEAinstitute for early-stage entrepreneurs; VILLAGEx, the flagship accelerator focused on companies seeking institutional investment.
  • Investment vehicle: Affiliated with Momentum Fund, which invests venture capital in qualifying alumni companies.
  • Events and convenings: Founder of New Orleans Entrepreneur Week and host of the annual 3rd Coast Venture Summit, which brings Gulf South startups together with venture capital investors from around the country.

The Idea Village also maintains a longstanding partnership with Louisiana Economic Development (LED) through its Louisiana Innovation division, LA.IO. Josh Fleig, LED’s chief innovation officer, said the recognition highlights the state’s growing entrepreneurial potential. “The Idea Village proves that world-class companies can be built in Louisiana when founders have the right support around them,” Fleig said. “We're thrilled to see our partner honored in such a big way. It validates the strength and impact of the entrepreneurial ecosystem we’re building in South Louisiana and across the state.”

Organizational metrics underscore the accelerator’s cumulative impact: more than $550 million raised by alumni companies and over $2 billion in regional economic impact since 2000. Recent program cohorts have contributed $97 million in capital raised and supported the creation of 505 jobs in the past five years alone, according to The Idea Village.

The Idea Village’s mix of programming, capital access and regional convening aims to retain high-growth companies in Louisiana and connect Gulf South startups with national investors. Its events, notably New Orleans Entrepreneur Week and the 3rd Coast Venture Summit, serve as primary platforms for pitching, networking and follow-on financing.

Outlook

With the TIME/Statista recognition, The Idea Village is positioned to elevate visibility for Gulf South startups and bolster its partnerships, including those with LED and LA.IO, to expand access to capital and mentorship within the state. The organization will likely continue leveraging IDEAinstitute and VILLAGEx to funnel ventures toward institutional investment while Momentum Fund remains a mechanism to channel venture capital into its alumni network. For regional founders, the award may translate into increased investor interest at marquee events such as the 3rd Coast Venture Summit and during New Orleans Entrepreneur Week.
