Largest-ever European tech fundraising: French AI firm Mistral valued at 21 bn euros after latest funding - RTL Today

French artificial intelligence firm Mistral announced it has raised €3 billion in a funding round led by Samsung Electronics, pushing the company's notional valuation to €21 billion. The startup described the cash infusion as the largest-ever European tech fundraising, saying the new capital will accelerate research and development, expand product and infrastructure capacity, and support international growth.

"This round means we can move faster on R&D, products, infrastructure and keep giving organisations the ability to run AI at scale, on their own terms," said Mistral chief executive and co‑founder Arthur Mensch.

Context and details

The €3 billion round nearly doubles Mistral's valuation from a year earlier and places the company among France's most valuable private tech names. Samsung led the latest tranche after Dutch chip equipment leader ASML participated in an earlier round. Analyst Lian Jye Su of Omdia said Samsung's investment will deepen the South Korean group's access to the European market and "further diversify its commercial touchpoints," while noting Mistral is "by far the best alternative outside of China and the US."

Mistral positions itself differently from larger US-based AI labs by offering models that clients can run on-premises with their own data — an attribute Mistral says appeals to organisations wary of exposing sensitive information to American hyperscalers. The company has already signed a deal with Microsoft to provide AI computing capacity and to make Mistral models available to Microsoft clients. Mistral has also stepped up infrastructure spending this year, including plans for its first data centre to be built in France.

Chief financial officer Johan Bergqvist emphasised that Mistral's capital needs differ from those of heavier-spending rivals. "We don't have the balance sheet of Microsoft," co‑founder Mensch acknowledged, while Bergqvist described Mistral as "more of a mix of Palantir and Anthropic when it comes to what we can offer."

"We've seen that we can develop other models more cost efficiently than some of our peers out there," Bergqvist added. "So our need for capital is not as vast as some of those competitors."

The emphasis on digital sovereignty has practical implications in France: authorities moved away from Palantir systems for intelligence services earlier this year in favour of domestic suppliers, and Mistral models are being deployed in a French government tool used across parts of the civil service administration.

Partners, comparisons and geopolitical timing

  • Lead investor: Samsung Electronics
  • Previous backer: ASML
  • Cloud/computing partner: Microsoft (agreement to provide AI computing capacity)
  • Key executive voices: Arthur Mensch (CEO, co‑founder); Johan Bergqvist (CFO)
  • Independent commentary: Lian Jye Su (Omdia analyst)

Outlook

Mistral says the funding will underwrite faster progress in R&D and broader international expansion. "We want to expand across Europe," Bergqvist said, "but it's also the Middle East, Asia, North America. We see increasing demands in all these regions today." The capital raise arrives as South Korean President Lee Jae Myung visits France and meets President Emmanuel Macron, underscoring growing strategic links between advanced manufacturers and European AI development.
