Land-based aquaculture startup ARK raises $8.5 million

Japanese land-based aquaculture startup ARK Co., Ltd. has closed a roughly $8.5 million financing package combining equity and loans to accelerate international expansion and technology development. The Series A round features equity investments from six venture capital and corporate investors, with UntroD Capital Japan, Beyond Next Ventures and BP Capital (which manages the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology Fund) named as lead investors. ARK also secured loans from Resona Bank, The Hokkoku Bank and Japan Finance Corporation.

"We are delighted and greatly encouraged to have successfully closed this round with such strong partners who share our vision and support our business strategy," said Yosuke Kurihara, co‑founder and CEO of Ark, in a company press release.

Business focus and planned use of proceeds

ARK is an R&D-driven company focused on commercial deployment of modular closed recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) and on developing markets for seafood produced via land-based aquaculture. The firm describes its concept as "let the ocean rest, create your own," reflecting an emphasis on decentralised, land-based production.

The company said it will apply the newly raised capital to several strategic priorities:

  • strengthening business foundations and recruiting global talent;
  • advancing technology and product development for its modular RAS;
  • developing land-based aquaculture facilities;
  • accelerating commercial deployment in target markets, particularly in the Global South.

Global expansion: UAE, Indonesia and the Global South

ARK identified the Global South as a priority for international growth, with initial projects planned in the United Arab Emirates and Indonesia. In June 2026, pilot projects deploying ARK's modular RAS technology in both countries were selected for support under a Japanese government programme for feasibility studies and small-scale demonstration projects. The company highlighted Abu Dhabi as a strategic hub, citing its position along the emerging India‑Middle East‑Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC).

Kurihara noted that ARK will leverage "our RAS technology, which is resilient in harsh environments, and our expertise in grouper aquaculture to build a sustainable seafood supply hub and contribute to food security in each region." The emphasis on grouper aquaculture underlines ARK's focus on marine species suited to closed-system production.

Policy tailwinds and next steps

Policy developments in Japan may bolster ARK’s international strategy. Japan’s Growth Strategy, published in July 2026, identified food technology as one of 17 strategic fields and explicitly listed land-based aquaculture among priority products and technologies. ARK said it will use the Series A funding and that policy support to further accelerate commercial deployment of land-based aquaculture systems.

Financial participants in the round underline institutional backing from both venture capital and banking partners. Lead investors UntroD Capital Japan, Beyond Next Ventures and BP Capital provided equity, while Resona Bank acted as lead lender alongside The Hokkoku Bank and Japan Finance Corporation.

With the capital secured, ARK plans to push forward on technology refinement, build demonstration and commercial facilities in target markets, and recruit the global talent required to scale modular RAS solutions across the Global South and other international markets.
