Grindstone Ventures Launches $31 Million Fund for African Seed-to-Series A Companies
Grindstone Ventures launched a R500 million (~$31M) fund to back Seed-to-Series A African tech companies, focusing on active ownership, follow-on capital and operational support to bridge the Seed-to-Series A gap.

South Africa-based Grindstone Ventures has launched a R500 million venture fund (about $31 million) to back high-growth, technology-enabled African companies from Seed through Series A. The fund, led by Thandiwe Maqetuka and established with Knife Capital and Thinkroom, is targeting an initial close of R150 million (roughly $9.3 million) and aims to build a portfolio of 15 to 20 companies, primarily in South Africa with selective investments elsewhere on the continent.
"The evolution from Seed to Series A remains one of the clearest gaps in the African venture ecosystem," said Keet van Zyl, co‑founder of Knife Capital. "The lessons from Grindstone Ventures Fund I have shown us exactly where that gap bites, and this fund gives us the opportunity to close it."
Fund strategy and operational approach
Grindstone Ventures is positioning itself to fill what its leadership describes as "Africa’s missing middle" — the period after early commercial validation when many startups struggle to attract larger institutional capital. Thandiwe Maqetuka framed the fund's mandate succinctly: "Our opportunity is not simply to provide more capital, but to identify exceptional businesses earlier, invest at a point where capital remains scarce, take meaningful ownership positions and work actively with founders to build companies capable of scaling, attracting institutional capital and ultimately delivering realisable returns."
The fund will deploy capital into companies that have demonstrated early commercial traction but require both funding and operational support to reach the scale demanded by later-stage investors. Planned portfolio construction and support mechanisms include:
- Follow-on capital for the strongest portfolio companies to sustain progress beyond initial cheques.
- Taking meaningful minority stakes and engaging in active ownership.
- Working with founders on strategy, governance, commercial growth, market access, future fundraising and exit readiness.
Market context and rationale
Grindstone Ventures arrives as African technology financing showed signs of recovery in 2025, with startups raising $4.1 billion across equity and debt, according to market tallies. South Africa led the continent in both equity funding and deal activity that year, yet funding remains concentrated in a small number of established markets and many early-stage companies continue to face difficulty raising follow-on equity.
The fund’s focus on active support and staged follow-on investments directly targets those challenges by helping companies build operational strength and an investment track record that can attract institutional rounds. By concentrating primarily on South Africa while retaining the flexibility to back select opportunities elsewhere in Africa, Grindstone aims to marshal local expertise and networks to accelerate growth trajectories.
Outlook
With an initial close target of R150 million and a total raise of R500 million planned, Grindstone Ventures seeks to assemble 15–20 portfolio companies over the life of the fund. Its model — combining capital with hands‑on governance and commercial support — is designed to move startups through the toughest part of the funding lifecycle and prepare them for larger institutional investment and exits.
If Grindstone successfully executes its strategy, the fund could become a visible bridge for companies that have proven demand but lack the operating scale or investor relationships needed to secure Series A or later rounds, particularly within South Africa’s active but concentrated venture landscape.
