Entity raises €5 million in seed funding to bring console-quality games to the ‘New Web’

Irish gaming distribution startup Entity has closed a €5 million seed funding round to develop a browser-native platform that aims to deliver console‑quality games to the “new web.” The financing, led by venture capital firms ACT, Delta Partners and Elkstone and supported by Enterprise Ireland alongside a cohort of games‑industry angel investors, will accelerate Entity’s platform build and support a planned public launch in early 2027.

“The way games are made, discovered, and played in the ‘new web’ era is fundamentally changing and these games will need a new home,” said Rich Barnwell, CEO and founder of Entity. “For too long the industry has been shackled by friction‑heavy downloads and arbitrary constraints. With Entity we are bringing the platform that the modern gamer needs: Console‑quality gaming experiences instantly accessible on whatever device they are using. With the backing of our new investors and an expert, supportive angel group, Entity delivers a new way to play and a new way to think about the games console experience.”

Context and platform details

Entity’s proposition is to replace — for most titles — the need for a dedicated console or PC by enabling instant, social gameplay directly in any modern browser. The startup’s platform leverages contemporary web standards such as WebGPU and WebAssembly to support high‑fidelity games that historically would require native installs. The company promises a click‑and‑play experience where players can join a multiplayer lobby or launch a game from a single link with no downloads or installs.

The senior leadership team brings a history of commercial success in mobile and web gaming. Founders Rich Barnwell, Kev Bergin, Dave McGovern, Fergus Duggan and Artur Stawiarski previously led DIGIT, the studio behind Star Trek Fleet Command, which was acquired by Scopely in 2019. Entity has also recruited Paul Farley as Head of Games; Farley founded Firestoke and Tag Games — the latter acquired by Scopely — and built ChiliConnect, which was acquired by Unity.

Funding, partners and strategic aims

  • Amount raised: €5 million seed round
  • Lead investors: ACT, Delta Partners, Elkstone
  • Support: Enterprise Ireland and industry angel investors
  • Launch timeframe: early 2027

Entity says the new capital will be used to accelerate platform development and curate a catalogue that spans global PC and console best‑sellers as well as original IPs built for the web. The company is targeting the broad base of developers adopting WebGPU and WebAssembly to create high‑quality titles that are playable directly in browsers, aiming to dramatically lower barriers to discovery and distribution.

Outlook

If Entity delivers on its promise, the platform could alter distribution dynamics by opening the largest possible global audience to browser‑hosted, console‑level games. The combination of a leadership team with proven exits and established buyers, a seed round backed by multiple VCs and institutional support from Enterprise Ireland positions Entity to pursue an aggressive product roadmap through 2027. The key near‑term milestones will be public platform availability, developer onboarding at scale, and demonstrable performance parity with native console and PC experiences in real‑world playtests.
