bp boosts U.S. Gulf output with Atlantis expansion startup

bp has started production from the Atlantis Major Facility Expansion in the U.S. Gulf, adding ~10,000 boed gross (≈5,000 boed net) via new subsea water-injection wells and extending the field's life. The project brings new subsea trees and topside pumps online and was completed ahead of schedule and under budget.

bp boosts U.S. Gulf output with Atlantis expansion startup

bp has started production from its Atlantis Major Facility Expansion project in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico, adding approximately 10,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boed) of gross peak annualized production and extending the life of the Atlantis deepwater field. The expansion, located about 150 miles south of New Orleans, brings two new subsea water injection wells, new subsea trees and topside water injection pumps online and is expected to contribute roughly 5,000 boed net to bp while providing additional capacity for future development.

"Atlantis has been one of the anchors of our Gulf business for nearly two decades, and this expansion proves there is still more value to be generated," said Andy Krieger, bp's senior vice president for the Gulf of America and Canada. "We're extending the life of a great asset while supporting jobs and investment in the region — all while making the most of infrastructure that's already in place."

The Atlantis field, discovered in 1998 and operating in about 7,074 feet of water, has been a cornerstone of bp's U.S. Gulf portfolio. bp operates the field with a 56% working interest; Woodside Energy holds the remaining 44%. The newly commissioned infrastructure is focused on water injection to maintain reservoir pressure and improve recovery rates, unlocking incremental oil production from an asset that has been producing for nearly 20 years.

  • Gross peak incremental production: ~10,000 boed (annualized)
  • Net production to bp: ~5,000 boed
  • New infrastructure: two subsea water injection wells, new subsea trees, topside water injection pumps
  • Location: ~150 miles south of New Orleans; water depth ~7,074 ft
  • Ownership: bp 56%, Woodside Energy 44%

bp said the Atlantis expansion was completed ahead of schedule and under budget, underscoring the company’s emphasis on maximizing value from existing infrastructure. The water injection capability not only supports current production but also creates optionality for further developments at Atlantis by stabilizing reservoir pressure and enhancing oil recovery efficiency.

The startup also aligns with bp’s broader strategy to grow production from its deepwater Gulf portfolio. The company recently sanctioned the Kaskida and Tiber developments, which bp expects, together, to add approximately 160,000 barrels per day (bpd) of new oil production capacity in the U.S. offshore region by the end of the decade. bp operates five production hubs in the U.S. Gulf—Argos, Atlantis, Mad Dog, Na Kika and Thunder Horse—positioning the company to leverage shared infrastructure and operational expertise across multiple assets.

Operationally, the Atlantis expansion emphasizes the role of subsea water injection as a cost-effective way to extend field life and extract additional reserves from mature deepwater developments. With the new pumps and subsea wells in place, bp anticipates maintaining reservoir performance while providing flexibility for future tiebacks or phases of development.

Looking ahead, the addition of Atlantis Major Facility Expansion production is expected to shore up near-term output from bp’s Gulf portfolio while the company advances sanctioned projects such as Kaskida and Tiber. The combined approach — incremental upgrades to existing assets and larger sanctioned developments — aims to sustain and grow bp’s deepwater production through the remainder of the decade.
