BITS Pilani-backed AI edtech startup Sortmyprep has raised $350,000 in a pre-seed funding round as it looks to bolster its vertical artificial intelligence infrastructure and expand curriculum coverage both in India and overseas. The round saw participation from prominent angel investors including Sameer Mehta, cofounder of boAt; actor and businessman Boman Irani, chairman of Rustomjee Group and Rustomjee International School; Subrat Pani, cofounder of OneAssist; Rohini Kasturi, CEO of HG Insights; and Ranjit Pawar, APAC Head at London Stock Exchange Group. The company had earlier received institutional support from PIEDS, the startup incubator at BITS Pilani.
"What stood out was the team's execution. Building strong organic adoption without relying on paid acquisition reflects both product quality and market demand. They have demonstrated a deep understanding of the problem they are solving," said Sameer Mehta, cofounder of boAt.
Product and traction
Founded by Ananya, Aryaman and Naman under ZKAP Edtech Service Pvt Ltd, Sortmyprep is developing Sorty, a curriculum-aligned conversational AI tutor designed for school exam preparation. Sorty provides personalised learning, adaptive study plans and 24x7 doubt resolution, backed by a proprietary academic dataset of over one million human-generated learning data points. The startup currently serves students in more than 15 countries and reports that 71 percent of its users have been acquired through referrals and word-of-mouth, without spending on paid marketing.
The fresh capital will be channelled to strengthen Sortmyprep’s vertical AI platform, expand its curriculum coverage and accelerate growth across India and international markets. The company currently focuses on international curricula such as IB and IGCSE and has plans to expand into CBSE, ICSE and other major global education boards.
Support, partnerships and investor mix
In addition to the angel investors participating in the round, Sortmyprep is supported through programmes and partnerships with several global technology and academic organisations. The startup has ties with Nvidia, Google for Startups, OpenAI, BITS Pilani and Ashoka University, which it says bolster its access to compute, mentorship and research collaboration as it scales its AI efforts.
