Billionaire entrepreneur Igor Tulchinsky sponsors Bayeux Tapestry London exhibit
Billionaire Igor Tulchinsky is listed as sole sponsor of the Bayeux Tapestry exhibit, drawing scrutiny for his ties to Israel and to WorldQuant Genesis, a Tel Aviv-based venture fund focused on AI, robotics and biotech led by Major General Saar Tzur.

The Bayeux Tapestry’s debut in London has been clouded by controversy after billionaire entrepreneur Igor Tulchinsky was listed as the sole sponsor of the exhibition running at the British Museum from September 2026 to July 2027. Critics have pointed to Tulchinsky’s ties to Israel — including donations to the Israeli military and funding for projects in West Bank settlements — and his links to an Israel-based defence-tech venture fund, prompting calls from activist groups for the museum to reconsider the partnership.
“When you just give money to somebody, they take the money, they spend it, it’s gone,” Tulchinsky told Fortune in comments cited by coverage of the sponsorship. “When you give somebody a skill, the skill stays with them their whole life, and maybe a part of it gets transferred across generations, and so on. It’s like in business. I look for maximum output per dollar spent. In philanthropy, I also look for maximum impact for dollar spent.”
Tulchinsky, founder and CEO of global quantitative investment firm WorldQuant, was born in Minsk and later emigrated to the United States. He has maintained ties to Israel: the first WorldQuant office was established in Ramat Gan, and he is described as a major supporter of Chabad. The sponsorship has drawn particular ire because of his involvement with projects in Israeli settlements. In November 2025 Tulchinsky unveiled a “therapy yurt” at the Mondlak Center in Efrat alongside Rabbi Efraim Duchman of Colel Chabad, Efrat Mayor Dovi Shefler and leaders of Keren Efrat (Efrat Foundation). At that event he dedicated the center to “Israel’s heroes” and said: “Just as we train our soldiers to run toward fire, we must train our citizens to run toward healing with the same courage. Every survivor who stands back up again declares to the world: ‘You can wound us, but you will never break us!’”
Further scrutiny has focused on Tulchinsky’s declared financial support for Israeli initiatives since October 7, 2023. Reported figures put his donations since that date at approximately NIS 30 million. In addition, Tulchinsky is connected to WorldQuant Genesis, a Tel Aviv-based venture fund launched in April 2026 that targets early-stage companies at the intersection of AI, robotics and biotechnology. The fund is led by Major General Saar Tzur, who retired from the Israel Defence Forces in August 2026 after 35 years of service, including command of the Northern Corps and a tenure as Head of Maneuver Array. Coverage notes that Tzur has promoted the use of remote-controlled vehicles in Gaza.
Political context has amplified the controversy. UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband recently declared that UK sanctions apply to settlements beyond the Green Line, stating: “So to those who finance or facilitate illegal settlements, let me say this: You will face the full force of UK sanctions. Settlements are illegal. They should not be promoted in our country.” Activist group Artists for Palestine UK described the British Museum’s partnership with Tulchinsky as “outrageous” and “shameful,” arguing that his business interests could be seen as profiting from Israeli military activities and questioning the museum’s ethical standards.
Outlook
- The British Museum and Tulchinsky were contacted for comment; no public response has been published alongside the exhibition opening.
- Protests and public pressure from pro-Palestine groups are likely to continue while the tapestry is on display through July 2027, with debate focused on museum sponsorship standards and the boundaries of cultural partnerships.
- Questions about investment links between private donors and defence technology firms in Israel may prompt further scrutiny of museum funding policies and donor vetting processes.
