Hydrovest Technology, founded by accountant-turned-entrepreneur Jeacim Francis Adaya, has scaled its hydroponics work from a family hobby into a research-focused agricultural enterprise based at the Qatar Science and Technology Park (QSTP). The startup develops soilless cultivation systems tailored for Qatar’s arid climate, aiming to make modern farming accessible to families, schools and local entrepreneurs while addressing localised food security needs.

“We started growing vegetables through hydroponics at home, and I was amazed that we could produce fresh, healthy food without soil. As I shared our journey on social media and through small community workshops, I realised many people in Qatar were eager to learn about modern farming but didn’t know where to begin,” Adaya said.

Adaya told Gulf Times that Hydrovest grew out of a practical family activity during the Covid-19 pandemic. After more than 15 years living in Qatar, he discovered soilless cultivation while looking for meaningful ways to spend time with his family. Early success in home production prompted him to share techniques online and run community workshops, which revealed strong local interest in hydroponics but a lack of entry-level guidance and affordable systems.

Hydrovest’s approach combines education, research and product development. Adaya highlighted the need for technologies engineered specifically for desert environments rather than transplanting methods from temperate countries. “Qatar’s climate presents unique challenges. The extreme summer temperatures, limited freshwater resources, and high cooling requirements make farming difficult. In the beginning, we experienced crop failures, equipment issues, and many trial-and-error experiments. Instead of seeing those as failures, we treated every challenge as valuable research,” he said.

Adaya described how his background in finance informed the company’s strategy: “People often think finance and agriculture are completely different fields, but I see many similarities. My background in finance taught me how to analyse data, manage risks, create sustainable business models, and make informed long-term decisions.” He said financial discipline helped shape solutions that are both environmentally sustainable and economically viable.

Hydrovest positions itself to fill a gap in the domestic market. While the country has invested in national food security at scale, Adaya noted affordable technology and hands-on technical guidance for smaller community growers remained scarce. Hydrovest aims to bridge that gap by delivering practical knowledge and lower-cost solutions that enable households, schools and small entrepreneurs to adopt modern farming practices.

On measures of success, Adaya emphasised social impact alongside commercial returns: “Success should not be measured only by financial performance but also by the positive impact we create for society. If our work inspires one child to love agriculture or helps one family grow their own food, then we are already making a meaningful difference.”

Looking ahead, Hydrovest is focused on continued research and development to optimise hydroponic systems for extreme heat and limited water availability, and on scaling outreach so that more communities can implement independent food production across Qatar.
