Anara Backs Egyptian Healthtech Startup Reme-D in $1.45 Million : TechMoran
Egyptian healthtech startup Reme-D raised $1.45M in a Pre-Series A led by Anara Impact Capital to scale local manufacturing of temperature-resilient molecular diagnostic kits and expand across Africa and the Middle East.

Egyptian health technology startup Reme-D has raised $1.45 million in a Pre-Series A round led by Anara Impact Capital to scale local production of molecular diagnostics and reduce Africa’s reliance on imported testing kits. The round also attracted participation from the Global Innovation Fund, Africa Health Ventures and existing investors, and will finance a tenfold expansion in manufacturing capacity, development of new diagnostic tests for cancer and genetic diseases, and the company’s expansion into additional African markets.
"We want patients in Africa and the Global South to no longer be prevented from accessing advanced molecular diagnostics because of cost or availability," said Reme-D Chief Executive Officer Salma Tammam. "That remains our ultimate goal."
Context and recent milestones
Founded in 2023 by Salma Tammam and based in Cairo, Reme-D produces temperature-resilient molecular diagnostic kits intended for use where refrigeration and laboratory infrastructure are unreliable. Since launch three years ago, the company says it has developed and commercialized 30 molecular diagnostic products from its Cairo manufacturing facility and supplied more than 550,000 tests to healthcare providers in Egypt, Kenya and Sudan.
- Funding so far: $1.45 million Pre-Series A, following a $500,000 investment from the Global Innovation Fund announced in April.
- Manufacturing expansion: relocation into a 1,500-square-meter facility and installation of additional production equipment to increase capacity by ten times.
- Product focus: tests for tuberculosis, HIV, hepatitis and human papillomavirus (HPV), with plans to develop oncology and genetic disease diagnostics.
- Commercial reach: customers include public laboratories, hospitals, private diagnostic centres and research institutions across Egypt, Kenya and Sudan.
- Intellectual property: the company has filed a U.S. patent application covering its proprietary molecular diagnostic technology.
Reme-D highlights its temperature-resilient kits as a differentiator in parts of Africa where cold-chain logistics and laboratory capacity remain limited. The startup also supplied a customized solar-powered mobile laboratory commissioned by the World Health Organization’s Egypt office to support the Egyptian Ministry of Health’s surveillance of vector-borne diseases in remote communities — an example cited by the company of deploying diagnostics outside conventional facilities.
"We were impressed by Salma and the team’s ability to combine deep scientific expertise with a practical understanding of delivering diagnostics in underserved markets," said Mohamed Hussain, Principal at Anara Impact Capital. "Reme-D has already demonstrated that high-quality molecular diagnostics can be developed and manufactured locally."
Outlook
The fresh capital is intended to accelerate commercial production, strengthen regulatory compliance and fuel distribution across Africa and the Middle East. For Reme-D, the next phase will test whether locally produced molecular diagnostics can compete on price and quality while expanding beyond infectious disease testing into oncology and genetic testing — markets that remain largely underserved across much of Africa.
Investors see the round as part of a broader shift toward backing companies that build critical healthcare infrastructure on the continent rather than relying on imports, a trend reinforced by supply-chain disruptions observed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Reme-D’s combination of local manufacturing, product resilience and a U.S. patent application positions it to pursue both regional deployment and international competition in molecular diagnostics.
