AI startup Palmear saves millions of date palms from Red Palm Weevil threat in Abu Dhabi
Palmear, a deep‑tech agtech startup founded by Jordanian engineer Zeid Sinokrot, developed patented AI‑acoustics to detect Red Palm Weevil and has deployed field‑validated solutions after four years of development. The company moved to Abu Dhabi in 2019, trained models on over 700,000 minutes of audio, and has been funded through personal capital, angels, corporate investors, VC and public innovation support.

Abu Dhabi — Palmear, a deep‑tech startup founded by 39‑year‑old Jordanian engineer Zeid Sinokrot, says it has developed patented AI‑acoustics technology that has helped save millions of date palms from the invasive Red Palm Weevil. The company moved to Abu Dhabi in late 2019, spent four years refining its product, and built a database of more than 700,000 minutes of field audio to train models that can detect the pest in real agricultural environments.
“I saw millions of date palms, symbols of our region’s culture, heritage, and sustenance, being lost to the Red Palm Weevil, and I knew that if a solution didn’t exist, someone had to build it,” Sinokrot said.
Palmear’s technology began as a lab prototype that performed well under controlled conditions but struggled when deployed outdoors. Sinokrot described the core technical hurdle: “One of our biggest challenges was realising that what works in the lab doesn’t necessarily work in the real world.” To bridge that gap the team collected extensive on‑farm audio — more than 700,000 minutes — to expose models to the diversity of natural sounds and environmental conditions that had previously undermined field reliability.
The business model and validation have been farmer‑driven. After four years of development, Sinokrot said the clearest indicator of success has been direct feedback from growers: “Our biggest success has been hearing directly from farmers who have benefited from our technology. After four years of building and refining our solution, seeing it solve a real and painful problem on the ground, and knowing it’s making a tangible impact on people’s livelihoods is incredibly rewarding.”
Funding for Palmear has been a mix of personal capital, friends and family, angel investors, corporate investors and venture capital. The company also received support through the Mohammed Bin Rashid Innovation Fund, which Sinokrot says helped refine route‑to‑market strategy and introduced advisers with relevant experience. Sinokrot comes from an entrepreneurial family, serves as a board member of Jordan’s Sinokrot Group, and previously worked with Bühler Group in Switzerland. He co‑founded Jordanian date producer SUFFCO and led a major industrial project in Iraq, experiences he credits with both domain knowledge and resilience.
Development challenges and practical deployment

Success is often closer than it seems, even when things feel uncertain.”
Looking ahead, Palmear has set an ambitious target to expand use of its technology to millions of farmers over the next five years and to broaden its role in agricultural and environmental intelligence. Its next phase will likely focus on scaling distribution, securing further commercial partnerships, and continuing to validate detection accuracy across new geographies and date palm varieties.
