Abu Dhabi launches Euroleague Basketball SuperCup

Abu Dhabi to host inaugural Euroleague Basketball SuperCup at Etihad Arena

Abu Dhabi will stage the first edition of the Euroleague Basketball SuperCup at Etihad Arena on Yas Island from September 18-19, 2026, bringing four elite clubs to the UAE to officially open the European club basketball season. The tournament, launched by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) in partnership with Euroleague Basketball, features reigning EuroLeague champion Olympiacos Piraeus, 2025 EuroLeague champion Fenerbahce Tarfin Istanbul, 2026 finalist Real Madrid, and UAE representatives Dubai Basketball.

"The competition is another milestone in Abu Dhabi's long-term partnership with Euroleague Basketball and reflects our shared ambition to grow the game while creating world-class experiences for fans," said Saleh Mohamed Al Geziry, Director General for Tourism at the DCT Abu Dhabi.

The SuperCup will play out over two days. On Friday, September 18, Olympiacos Piraeus will face Fenerbahce Tarfin Istanbul at 6:00pm GST, followed by Dubai Basketball taking on Real Madrid at 9:00pm GST. The following day, September 19, will see the third-place game kick off at 6:00pm GST and conclude with the first-ever Euroleague Basketball SuperCup Final at 9:00pm GST.

  • Venue: Etihad Arena, Yas Island, Abu Dhabi
  • Dates: 18–19 September 2026
  • Participants: Olympiacos Piraeus, Fenerbahce Tarfin Istanbul, Real Madrid, Dubai Basketball
  • Kick-off times (GST): 18 Sept – 6:00pm & 9:00pm; 19 Sept – 6:00pm & 9:00pm

The new SuperCup builds on Abu Dhabi's recent track record as a host for major European basketball events. The city hosted the 2025 EuroLeague Final Four, an engagement that organisers say laid the groundwork for deeper collaboration between Euroleague Basketball and DCT Abu Dhabi. The two organisations have framed the SuperCup as the "next chapter" in that long-term partnership, aiming to elevate the club season curtain-raiser with a high-profile, competitive event in the Gulf.

For Dubai Basketball, inclusion presents a rare opportunity to test itself against top European competition on home soil and before regional fans. Facing Real Madrid, a club that reached the 2026 EuroLeague final, the UAE representatives will attract local interest and provide an international benchmark for the domestic programme.

Euroleague Basketball's decision to place the SuperCup in Abu Dhabi also underscores growing ties between European club sport and Gulf hosts. The compact, four-team format offers a concentrated showcase: two semi-finals on opening night followed by classification and the championship decider the next evening, designed for maximum spectator engagement and broadcast scheduling across multiple time zones.

Looking ahead, organisers will be watching ticket sales, broadcast arrangements and the competitive balance of the inaugural tournament as indicators for future editions. If successful, the Euroleague Basketball SuperCup could become an annual fixture on the European calendar and a recurring high-profile event for Abu Dhabi's sporting calendar, reinforcing the Emirate's positioning as a venue for major international sports properties.
